Finding the right property
With so much to choose from, Blue i Properties is here to make things easy for you. Whatever your priorities, living alone or with others, our friendly team can help you find the perfect accommodation. Blue i’s booklet called “Our ten essential steps to finding your student pad” is free to everyone. It contains the key questions you should consider when embarking on your student house hunt.
- Know what you want...
..which might be difficult, so thinking of your present home, have an idea of a clean, bright, friendly place with good sized rooms. Think about if want to live alone or prefer to share? If the latter, it is best to know about your friend’s cleanliness before sharing a house with them!
- Consider the location...
..as this will make a huge difference to your student life. Check out the right area, close to shops, with fast reliable wifi. If you are going to walk, check the street lighting or if cycle, is their storage. Remember to ask about BiBS (the Blue i Bike Scheme)? If you own a car, is there parking?
- Responsible viewing...
..involves everyone viewing the Virtual Tour or the house before you sign the AST contract. Make a note of its condition, as photos of clean houses mean good agents meaning a good landlord. If you feel uncomfortable about being pressurised, walk away. Always sleep on the decision.
- Ask questions and do your research...
.. as a good letting agent will answer all your questions, without hesitation. If they cannot or won’t, then come to Blue i, as we will answer everything, the good and the bad. You must ask about repair call-out times for boilers and wifi. Finally, remember Inclusive Rents are more expensive but life is simpler.
Student wellbeing
For many, it will be your first time away from home, bringing increased independence but more self-responsibility. At Blue i Properties, our tenants wellbeing is very important to us and our friendly team is always on hand to give some advice whenever you need it. Here are some tips on staying healthy:
- Take breaks to maintain…
..a healthy lifestyle. This is easy to say when suddenly you are managing your finances, navigating new social circles and staying on top of course work. This can lead to feeling overwhelmed, anxious and stressed, so please set aside time for activities that allows you to unwind and gives you something to look forward to.
- Eat healthy foods...
..to create a balanced diet for your physical wellbeing, for mental health and academic success. Your brain takes up about 300 of your resting body’s 1300 calories a day, so you must eat properly but please avoid sugar, starch and refined carbs. Go for low-glycemic foods that are easily digestible, like fresh fruit and green vegetables.
- Reach out if you’re struggling
Anxiety and depression are by far the most commonly reported mental health issues among students. The University of Derby’s Student Wellbeing Service provide a free and confidential counselling service to all students here: 01332 593000 (Monday - Thursday 9am -7pm & Friday 9am - 5pm), wellbeingcentre@derby.ac.uk or visit: Brook House Student Wellbeing Centre on Nuns Street, Derby, DE1 3LP (open Mon-Friday 9am-5pm)
