Learn to love oneself Yoga class at Energie Fitness Derby

Learn to love oneself Yoga class at Energie Fitness Derby
Although I have been to a few Yoga classes over the years I have never been to one that was carried out in near darkness. The problem was I arrived a few minutes late and had not expected that all the dozen participants must have been ready and waiting well before 7pm. I stumbled into the semi dark Studio armed with an exercise mat to find it full and only a small space at the front, to the right of the instructor. Great location for a beginner to see what was going on and helped by the light, I realised that maybe I would able to get away with doing the exercises wrong!

Looking around the Studio there were two other guys and ten ladies, who were all well kitted out in colourful gym gear, whereas I was in my bog standard loose grey tracksuit. Maybe in this sort of class I should consider dressing the part, especially as a rusty beginner.

The lady instructor, whose name I forgot was welcoming everyone as I took up my position. She soon got into the rhythm of the exercises and one of the nice things about these classes is that you don’t have to think about what comes next, as the instructor describes what one has to do with your arms and legs. As a beginner you certainly have to concentrate on which side is right and which is left, which direction is up and which is down.

As you know there are Indian names for all the movements and positions but unfortunately the names meant nothing to me and so concentrating hard we all ploughed on. Some of the ladies had obviously done Yoga before as they appeared to flow effortlessly from one exercise to another. Meanwhile I was sort of moving from one position to the next, whilst trying to remember where my arms and legs were supposed to go and stealing a quick peak at what other people were doing. The peaking made me realise that I was not the only person, who was a bit lost, as there were a number of other uncoordinated bodies in the Studio.

This realisation was confirmed when the instructress said that next week she was going to suggest that the Monday evening Yoga class would be for experienced Yogistas and the Thursday evening class would be for beginners, so that the latter would not hold back the former and that the beginners would learn the correct moves and the names. An audible sigh of relief could be heard.

During the relaxing part of the 75 minute session we had a very interesting expalantion about Yoga being all about “loving oneself” and that this was the beginning of self confidence and ability to love others. Although I knew that Yoga was all about the link between mind and body, I was not quite expecting the philosophical to start at the first session. Certainly it was very nice to hear and I look forward to hearing more as in this hectic world we live in, we need more love and understanding if we are to overcome the many challenges the UK faces.

Roll on next Thursday and this time I need to get there early to book a better place. Maybe we will see you there as this sort of class can only help reduce the stress and improve one’s wellbeing. Please note that if you are a Blue i tenant then we will help with the membership fee, as we now from personal experience how important exercise is in keeping one healthy… more details click/tap here >> ENERGIE FITNESS DERBY

My first Fitness Pilates class at Energie Fitness - Derby

My first Fitness Pilates class at Energie Fitness - Derby
I have been going to Energie Fitness for the past 4 months, starting soon after it opened, as it just across the road from the Blue i offices. Initially I concentrated on all the machines like the Treadmill, Cross Trainer, Bicycle and Rowing machine but then I felt that I wanted a change. I decided to try some of the Pilates and Gym classes that they run in the Studio at the back of the brand new and well-equipped gym.

The idea was to help with my flexibility, improve my core and increase my joint strength, plus some overall fitness. It was with some trepidation that I appeared on Tuesday at about 6.45pm for the 7pm class and as there was no one else around d I did a few minutes warming up on the treadmill. At 6.55 a lot of much younger people started trickling in and so armed with one of the foam gym mats I walked in with six ladies and two gentlemen, all of them at least half my age if not a third!

The instructor, called Ness started us of with some questions about “did anybody have any injuries” and that the class was going to be gentle much to my relief! Fortunately my previous exercise at the gym stood me in good stead but certainly some of the balancing exercises were a bit hit and miss as standing on one leg and pointing the other to the front, side and back was easier said than done!

I had very little time to watch what other people were doing but all of them seemed to be getting the hang of the arched back, Leg circle, the Leg Stretching and various exercise based on the Plank, which really got my arms aching.

Gradually the hour ticked by and I was quite glad when it came to the end and I could relax. My muscles did not seem to be too overstretched and the following day helped by a protein drink with my bowl of porridge for breakfast everything seemed to be OK. I am looking forward to next Tuesday to see what happens then and certainly if you want to strengthen your core and all the other things mentioned above, there is plenty of space in the Studio. The monthly cost is reduced for Students and in order to help our tenants, Blue i pays part of the joining fee. We hope to see you soon so come along and join the fun… more class details are here

Busy time welcoming new tenants.

Busy time welcoming new tenants.
It has been a few weeks since my last introductory article about myself and Jaq being the new “Meeters and Greeters” at the Blue i office but it has been so busy with lots of people popping in for viewings, now that lectures have started again. It was quiet during the first part of January but the last week of January and February meant that we were getting up and down from our new basket, which is now in the middle of the office. The picture shows us having a bit of a relaxing moment from a busy Valentine morning welcoming people.

We are very surprised at all the activity and the lovely people that we have been seeing. They have all been very understanding about our white hairs and the fact that despite Maryvonne and Debbie removing all our hairs from the blue chairs, we do seem to leave quite a lot everywhere. We realise that jumping on to chairs is not really the done thing but how is one supposed to welcome people if you don’t jump on to the chair next door to them and offer up a paw of friendship. I am sure that you agree that there is nothing like a friendly paw at a time of uncertainty as house hunting can be really stressful.

What I must say is that whenever I give some body a paw they all shake it and give me a stroke. As far as I am concerned this is real friendship and both Jaq and I agree that this simple welcome helps calm everyone down for the viewings that they are going on. We also agree with the market research that patting us and giving us a stroke really helps the wellbeing in this stressful world we live in.

One thing though that Jaq and I are a bit upset about is the biscuit tin. It has some very nice chocolate, shortbread and ginger nut biscuits in it and when they are passed around to visitors, we are never included. We think that as part of the European Dog Rights legislation we should be included in the sharing of tasty morsels. I must dash .. take care and do pop in for chat, a pat and a friendly paw… they are all good for the soul and we love them.

Woof, woof..

What a lovely surprise. We welcomed a new tenant to the Blue i family recently, all the way from the Czech Republic. Not only do they love dogs, but they teach Hatha Yoga and as you all know we are big into exercise, eating well, running around and with William has just started Yoga at Energie Fitness it all fitted together.

Well this new tenant was a complete surprise, as Klara was due to arrive at 11o’clock but she arrived early as they had a very full day ahead of her. Klara and her mother Blanca had driven from the Czech Republic a few days previously and were staying in a local hotel, until they were able to find some where for Klara to live, whilst she studied for her degree at the University of Derby.

Her English was excellent having worked and studied in the UK before and so this helped her make a very quick decision about a lovely furnished flat on Stanley Street. I got to hear about it when they came back to sign all the paperwork in the office and her mother Blanca just made me feel so good with lots of lovely hugs and strokes.

Both Jaq and I went up to greet them when they came in but Jaq soon disappeared back into our basket near the electric heater – he is so much the basket potato. Anyway, it allowed me to continue “meeting and greeting” Klara and Blanca. I followed them into the main office and once coffees had been organised, I was invited up on to Blanca’s chair, which was a bit of a squeeze as you can see in the photo.

I was in seventh heaven as she even liked my licks. They have two Alsatians and a Pug at home and as they were already missing them, they made it up with giving me lots of strokes and in return I gave them lots of licks. I don’t what it was but Blanca certainly had a way of calming me down with her pats as she found my sweet spot. It could of course be something to do with her teaching Yoga. The only problem was that as I am moulting, quite a lot of white hair got on her clothes, but she did not seem to mind.

All the paperwork seemed to be done much quicker than normal. It must have been the quickest tenancy on record as whilst I was being patted by Blanca, William answered Klara’s questions and Debbie sorted out the Tenancy Agreement. I gather from the bits of conversation I picked up that from initially meeting to view the flat at 9.30 to signing the documents and leaving with the keys it was only 2 hours! Quite amazing, it must be a Guinness Book of Records and just in time for Klara to leave and get to her first lecture at midday. They were so pleased that they had found a nice place but secretly I think they were even more pleased by our meeting and greeting. In fact when Jaq and I were chatting about it later, we reckon that we sealed the deal with our welcoming.

I was quite exhausted by all the rushing and greeting and so after they left, I went back to our basket, which had been kept warm by Jaq. I can see the advantages of this Yoga stuff, if it makes you as calm as I felt after Blanca’s special stroking and patting. I need to get some more information on this as I think my wellbeing rating went up quite considerably this morning.

Before I sign off please don’t forget. as much exercise as time permits, eat lots of veg and fruit and now a sprinkling of Yoga from one of Energie Fitness’ classes and your wellbeing will certainly improve.

Woof, woof and until the next time…
